5 Common Discomforts you Might Face During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting time for many women, but it’s not always sunshine and roses. While some women go through pregnancy with a breeze and only a few complaints here and there others go through a long-difficult nine months. 
This article points out 5 such common discomforts and some tips to overcome them during pregnancy that many women face during pregnancy.

1. Morning sickness

More than half of the women experience morning sickness i.e. Nausea and vomiting during their first trimester. While for some the symptoms stop after 3 months, others experience it throughout their pregnancy. Doctors believe it is because of the rise of hormones in women during pregnancy.
Morning sickness usually occurs in the morning but there is no hard and fast rule as it can happen any time of the day. It can range from a little queasiness when your stomach is empty to more severe vomiting causing you to lose fluids and weight.
Tips for overcoming Morning Sickness:

  1. Eat your meals more often in smaller quantities as missing meals can make nausea worse.
  2. Try to avoid smells and tastes that make you feel sick.
  3. Have low-fat high protein meals to help combat nausea.
  4. Keep some snacks beside the bed and eat a little bit before you get up for the day.

2. Pregnancy Fatigue

Fatigue is another common symptom that occurs during pregnancy. It is often suggested to take frequent naps and be well-rested as the body can get tired quite easily. Fatigue happens because your body is taking a lot of energy to properly develop your baby and prepare you for motherhood.
Although Fatigue is very common, It can be a sign of anemia too which is also common during pregnancy.

  1. Try to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Also, make sure to take multiple short naps during the day as well.
  2. Get some exercise. 
  3. Make sure to eat well. Poor or unhealthy eating habits can make you feel more tired and cranky as compared to eating a healthy balanced meal.
  4. Ask your health care provider to have routine blood checkups for anemia.

3. Heartburn

Heartburn is a burning feeling that often starts in the stomach and rises up to the chest or throat. It can occur any time but most often happens in the second or third trimester. This happens because your growing uterus (womb) puts pressure on your stomach and the food goes back into the esophagus and creates a sour taste in your mouth along with burning and pain.
Tips for overcoming Heartburn:

  1. Drink plenty of warm liquids.
  2. Don’t immediately lie down after eating or try to not eat during bedtime.
  3. Ask your doctor to give you some prescriptions or a safe antacid for heartburn.
  4. Do not drink alcohol as it may cause serious problems for you and your baby.

4. Sore Breasts.

Breast soreness happens because your breasts begin to change during pregnancy as they get ready to prepare milk for your baby. Breasts grow heavier, tender, and more fuller and nipples may become darker during pregnancy because of hormonal changes and the increase of milk and fat glands in them. 
Breast changes usually are noticeable by the sixth to eighth week of pregnancy and may continue to grow throughout pregnancy.
Tips for overcoming Breast Soreness:

  1. Wear a good maternity bra that is firm and can hold your growing breasts.
  2. If you’re exercising make sure you wear a good sports bra.
  3. Wear clothes that are loose-fitting and do not pressure your breasts.
  4. Ask your health care provider for safe pain relief.

5. Frequent Urination.

This symptom tends to be more of an issue early in the pregnancy and in the final weeks before your baby is due. This happens because there is more fluid circulating in your body and also because your growing uterus is putting more pressure on the bladder. 
Tips for Avoiding Frequent Urination:

  1. Don’t have caffeinated drinks as caffeine can cause you to need to urinate often.
  2. Stay hydrated and don’t hold in your urine.
  3. Wear a sanitary pad or liner if your urine leaks even when you laugh, cough or sneeze.
  4. Drink less water or fluids before bedtime.

All in all, it is normal to have all these symptoms and discomforts in your pregnancy. But if you’re confused and worried it is best to talk to your health care provider about all these symptoms as they may help you understand better about these discomforts.
